Nepal’s political crisis intensified Friday as President Ram Chandra Paudel remained reluctant to dissolve parliament amid mounting pressure to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister.

With the death toll from youth-led protests reaching 51, constitutional experts highlight a critical impasse: Karki cannot assume the PM role without parliamentary dissolution, as the constitution prohibits non-MPs from holding the position while parliament remains active.

Negotiations stalled as the President sought legal counsel before resuming talks at 2 PM Friday. Officials confirmed two potential pathways: either amending the constitution to accommodate Karki’s appointment or dissolving parliament entirely. The former chief justice has emerged as protesters’ preferred candidate for leading an interim government, but legal hurdles persist. Constitutional experts remain optimistic that Friday’s discussions will yield a breakthrough solution to end the deadlock that has paralyzed the Himalayan nation since Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation.
