John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis honored for discovering quantum tunnelling and energy quantisation in electric circuits

Stockholm, October 7 – The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for their discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday.(

“These discoveries show how century-old quantum mechanics continues to deliver new surprises while powering modern technology,” said Olle Eriksson, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics. He noted that quantum mechanics forms the foundation of all digital innovations, from semiconductors to supercomputers.

According to the Academy, the laureates’ work paves the way for next-generation quantum technologies — including quantum cryptography, computing, and sensors ,marking a major leap toward practical quantum devices.

The Nobel week began Monday with the Medicine Prize going to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for uncovering the immune system’s regulatory T-cells. The Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economics Prizes will follow on October 8, 9, 10, and 13 respectively.

Each Nobel Prize includes 11 million Swedish kronor (₹1.03 crore) and will be presented on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
