Oscar-winning anthem performed at Beating Retreat following heated debate over composer’s remarks

At the Republic Day Beating Retreat ceremony in New Delhi, the iconic Oscar-winning track “Jai Ho” by AR Rahman was played by the armed forces bands, standing out as a highlight of the musical tribute that closed the nation’s 77th Republic Day celebrations. The event at Vijay Chowk featured stirring renditions of patriotic favourites by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force bands, with senior leaders in attendance including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The performance of “Jai Ho,” originally composed for Slumdog Millionaire, resonated across the ceremony, coming at a time when Rahman has been at the center of a public debate. The legendary composer recently made remarks in an interview about his experience in the Hindi film industry, suggesting a shift in creative power and hinting that “communal” dynamics might have influenced opportunities over the past eight years comments that sparked wide discussion online and within Bollywood circles.

Industry personalities offered mixed reactions: some rejected the communal angle outright, citing India’s inclusivity, while others defended Rahman’s right to voice his perspective. Rahman later clarified in a social media video that he never intended to hurt sentiments and emphasized his lifelong dedication to music that honours and unites the country.
