Shehzad Poonawalla has stepped down from the Bharatiya Janata Party, submitting his resignation to senior party leadership over what sources describe as personal reasons, according to a CNN-News18 report. The party has not issued any official confirmation or statement on the development.
The clearest signal came from Poonawalla’s own X account, where he quietly dropped all references to the BJP from his bio on Thursday, now identifying himself simply as a devoted supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He offered no public explanation for the change.
Poonawalla had joined the BJP in 2017 after parting ways with the Congress amid disagreements over that party’s internal presidential election process, and went on to become one of the BJP’s most recognisable national spokespersons, known for combative television appearances and sharp attacks on Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi.
In recent weeks, he had posted old interview clips suggesting he was ready to leave active politics, including remarks noting he’d planned to exit after the 2024 general election but stayed on through several state polls.
