Prime Minister accuses TMC and Opposition of blocking women’s reservation, alleges “conspiracy” and illegal appeasement politics

New Delhi, April 19 – Intensifying his campaign for the West Bengal Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing them of obstructing the women’s reservation bill and betraying the aspirations of women.
Addressing a rally in Bankura’s Bishnupur, Modi alleged that the TMC, along with the Congress, conspired to block the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which proposes 33% reservation for women in legislatures. He claimed that the Opposition did not want more women from Bengal to enter politics, as it would challenge what he described as a “Maha Jungle Raj” in the state.
Calling the state government “nirmam” (ruthless), Modi said the growing public enthusiasm at rallies reflected anger against the ruling dispensation. He emphasised that his government is committed to expanding women’s participation in nation-building and ensuring their safety and empowerment.
The Prime Minister also accused the TMC of bending laws to benefit illegal immigrants and promoting religion-based reservations, which he said undermines constitutional values.
His remarks follow the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha, after a united Opposition resisted its passage.
