Mothers Live in Fear as Disappearances Become Routine. A Young Activist Implores India to Stand in Solidarity.

In Balochistan, some farewells are destined to remain unanswered.

EXCLUSIVE | For newstrustindia.com

Farrah Baloch, the region’s youngest political activist, alleges that over 15,000 Baloch individuals have been forcibly disappeared. Among them, she states, are her own grandfather and uncle, seized from her family and never returned.

“Disappearances have been normalised,” she disclosed to newstrustindia.com in an exclusive interview. In her harrowing account, the world has observed an entire people being silenced, yet has deliberately chosen to ignore their plight.

School Gates: A Threshold of Terror

The most chilling repercussion, Baloch contends, transcends mere statistics. It permeates the morning rituals of Baloch households. Mothers across the province, she laments, are gripped by fear when sending their children to school, as the pervasive violence spares no one, not even the young. Pakistani authorities have consistently denied culpability for enforced disappearances.

Her analysis of this grim reality is stark. Education, she asserts, fosters empowerment, and authorities dread the demands an educated generation might make. “The administration is scared of the empowerment that education brings,” she declares.

Not a Distant Frontier: Quetta, the Capital, Engulfed

The brutality, Baloch insists, is not confined to remote districts. It permeates the provincial capital of Quetta, where she claims disappearances and killings of Baloch people are a frequent occurrence. When families seek answers, she states, officials disclaim all knowledge and evade accountability.

“Tokenism” from International Humanitarian Agencies

Her most scathing criticisms are reserved for the international community. Global humanitarian organisations, she observes, vociferously mobilise over animal suffering, yet have offered only token gestures in the face of what she labels gross and blatant human rights violations in Balochistan.

“An entire civilisation,” she asserts, “is being persecuted and brutalised into silence.”

A Plea to India

Baloch affirms that she speaks on the issues pivotal to her and her homeland. She believes India and its citizens can stand alongside her in what she describes as a courageous quest for justice.
