Governing body clears senior-Supreme-Court judge to become 53rd CJI, succeeding Justice B.R. Gavai; will steer bench until February 9 2027

NEW DELHI : In a landmark appointment, the Union government has notified that Justice Surya Kant will become the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on November 24, following the retirement of B.R. Gavai on November 23.

Justice Kant, who rises from a modest village in Hisar (Haryana), brings to India’s highest judicial post a blend of regional representation and decades of legal service. He will serve a tenure of approximately 14–15 months, culminating in his retirement on February 9 2027.

His elevation follows the traditional seniority convention: Justice Gavai recommended Justice Kant as his successor, and the Law Ministry issued the formal appointment.

Born on February 10, 1962, Justice Kant commenced his legal career at the Hisar District Court in 1984 and later practiced before the Punjab & Haryana High Court. He served as Haryana’s Advocate General, was elevated to the High Court bench in 2004, and joined the Supreme Court in May 2019.

Known for his sharp mind and commitment to justice-system reform, Justice Kant has authored rulings that touch upon prison reform, dignity of the incarcerated, and timely judicial processes.

His appointment marks the first time a jurist from Haryana will hold the office of Chief Justice. Legal observers say the move underscores the judiciary’s evolving geography and the importance of diverse regional representation at the top.

As he prepares to take the oath, attention turns to how Justice Kant will guide India’s apex court through a period of rapid legal and societal change.
