PM writes to women of India ahead of special three-day Parliament session beginning April 16; says further delay would be gross injustice

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made a passionate and direct appeal for the swift passage of amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam , the Women’s Reservation Act declaring that Indian democracy will emerge stronger and more vibrant if the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held with one-third reservation for women firmly in place.

In an open letter shared on his official X handle, Modi stated that the daughters of India cannot be made to wait endlessly for what is rightfully theirs. “When the voice of women becomes stronger in our legislatures, the voice of democracy itself becomes stronger,” he wrote, urging citizens to encourage their local MPs to participate actively in the upcoming special Parliament session beginning April 16.

The three-day special sitting has been called specifically to pass the constitutional amendments needed to implement reservation ahead of 2029, bypassing the original timeline that had linked enforcement to a post-2027 Census delimitation exercise effectively deferring it until 2034.

Once passed, the amended law will expand total Lok Sabha seats to 816, with 273 seats exclusively reserved for women , a historic milestone in India’s democratic journey.
