Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and Shahdara’s CBD Ground named as new designated sites; CJP vows “the whole country will become Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, October 12: Jantar Mantar, for decades the capital’s best-known stage for dissent, is no longer an official protest venue. A Delhi Police circular issued on Monday announced that the site has been de-notified.

The circular said the decision followed recommendations from a committee set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs to identify suitable alternative venues for citizens’ protests. Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and the CBD Ground in Shahdara will now serve as designated protest sites. A revised standard operating procedure for these venues will be issued separately.

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke hit back on X. He said the site had already been turned into a “war zone” and declared that the entire country would now become Jantar Mantar.

The move comes after a weekend of mass detentions, including several former chief ministers, which police described as preventive steps to maintain law and order. Since June, Jantar Mantar had been the centre of youth-led protests by the CJP, whose campaign ended with then education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged exam irregularities.

The site returned to the spotlight last month after an investigative report alleged that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected on record at least 14 times in 10 months to SIR-related decisions taken without their knowledge. The report gave fresh momentum to the Opposition’s “vote chori” allegations against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
