Delhi Police book Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for unauthorised entry as INDIA bloc steps up demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation

New Delhi, October 7: The Opposition’s campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar escalated on Wednesday after Delhi Police registered an FIR against Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc members for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhavan premises without permission during Tuesday’s protest.
The bloc had planned to march from Parliament House to Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission’s headquarters. Police said no permission had been sought for the march and stopped it near Akashvani Bhavan. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi then slipped through a staff gate and began a sit-in beneath a banyan tree on the All India Radio campus. They were joined by KC Venugopal, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and other Congress leaders. The dharna lasted about six hours before police detained the leaders and later released them.
Rahul Gandhi posted a video of his detention online and warned of a coming “reckoning.” Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said he felt ashamed at the treatment of the leaders and alleged that votes were being deleted in his state.
The Patiala House Court separately ordered the release on bonds of students who had been arrested during an anti-CEC protest on Monday.
The Cockroach Janta Party has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10. Its demands include Kumar’s resignation, a freeze on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and repeal of the 2023 law governing Election Commission appointments.
