Congress leader says she wrote the book to set the record straight; memoir tracing her six decades in India releases November 10

New Delhi, October 27: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has said she expects a stir when her memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, gets released on November 10.

In a video released on Tuesday, Gandhi said there was bound to be some “tamasha” once the book came out. She said much of what had been written about her over the years was either invented or exaggerated, and she wanted to describe events as they really happened rather than let others define her life.

She was careful not to call the book a mere “version” of events, describing it instead as her story. She acknowledged that people hold differing views and said some readers might change their opinion of her, while others might think less of her. That, she said, comes with writing a book and being in public life.

Gandhi also briefly recalled that she had been completely opposed to her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, becoming prime minister. She hesitated at first, wondering aloud whether she should tell the whole story.

The memoir follows her journey from her childhood in Italy to her life in India as Rajiv Gandhi’s wife and Indira Gandhi’s daughter-in-law. It revisits the assassinations of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, and her later entry into politics. Gandhi has described it as an account of the love, loss and sense of belonging that shaped her life.

She recently made her debut on X and Instagram to promote the book.
