Pilgrimage halted on both routes from August 9 amid rains, track repairs and adverse weather forecast
Srinagar, August 9: The Amarnath Yatra has been suspended on both traditional routes from Sunday, August 9, authorities said, citing weather conditions and the need for repair and maintenance of vulnerable sections of the pilgrimage tracks.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg urged pilgrims to follow safety advisories issued by the authorities and cooperate with officials to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage.
The 57-day Yatra began on July 3, with pilgrims travelling to the Amarnath Cave shrine through the Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the Baltal route in Ganderbal district. More than 4.8 lakh pilgrims have so far visited the shrine and performed darshan.
The latest suspension comes after recent rainfall affected several stretches along the pilgrimage routes. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has undertaken repair and maintenance work at vulnerable locations to improve the safety and accessibility of the tracks.
The decision has also been prompted by an adverse weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the coming days. Authorities have advised pilgrims to remain attentive to official announcements and avoid undertaking the journey during the suspension period.
Despite the temporary halt, the traditional Chadi Mubarak procession will proceed through the Pahalgam route and formally mark the culmination of this year’s pilgrimage on August 28.
The administration said safety remains the priority as restoration work and weather conditions are monitored before normal movement on the routes is resumed.
