More than 100 killed as buildings collapse across western Colombia; thousands affected and rescue teams race to find survivors
Bogotá, August 11: Colombia has declared a national state of emergency after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s western region on Monday, killing at least 111 people and leaving hundreds injured. The quake, described as Colombia’s strongest this century, caused widespread destruction and triggered a major search-and-rescue operation.
The earthquake struck shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar in Chocó, about 250 miles west of Bogotá. Tremors were felt across large parts of Colombia and in neighbouring Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.
Cities including Pereira, Cali, Manizales and Quibdó reported significant damage. More than 1,500 buildings were damaged or collapsed, while hospitals and other critical infrastructure were also affected. Rescue teams, soldiers, firefighters and volunteers have been searching collapsed structures for people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The situation remains particularly difficult in remote parts of Chocó, where poor accessibility is complicating emergency operations. Thousands of people have reportedly been displaced or are searching for missing relatives.
President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office only days before the disaster, travelled to the affected region and ordered the mobilisation of national military and police resources. Authorities are arranging emergency assistance, temporary shelter and support for affected families.
International assistance has also begun. The United States has pledged $15.5 million in emergency aid, while other countries and humanitarian organisations have offered support.
