US Passport Drops Out of Global Top 10 for the First Time; India Climbs Eight Spots in 2025 Ranking

Henley Passport Index 2025 shows Singapore leading the world with visa-free access to 193 countries; India rises to 77th position, reflecting its growing global influence.
For the first time in two decades, the US passport has fallen out of the world’s top 10 most powerful passports, ranking 12th in the Henley Passport Index 2025,on par with Malaysia. American passport holders can now travel visa-free to 180 of 227 destinations, down from previous years.
At the top of the list, Singapore retains its position as the world’s most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to 193 countries, followed by South Korea (190) and Japan (189).
Meanwhile, India’s passport has improved significantly, jumping eight places to rank 77th, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries. Analysts credit this to India’s stronger diplomacy, expanding digital visa systems, and new bilateral agreements with nations like Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
Experts say stricter entry rules in countries such as Brazil, China, and Myanmar have weakened the US passport’s power. “This shift reflects changing global dynamics, open nations are advancing, while restrictive ones are falling behind,” said Christian Kälin, Chair of Henley & Partners.
A proud moment for nation 😍 🇮🇳
