48-year-old house help dies at the spot after being hit at a zebra crossing; driver apprehended as locals block road in protest
A 48-year-old woman was killed after she was allegedly hit by a speeding BMW while crossing a road in Delhi’s Mehram Nagar area near Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday, police said.
The deceased, identified as Jaiwanti, worked as a house help. According to police officials, the accident took place around noon when she was crossing the road at a zebra crossing to go for lunch. The impact was severe and she died at the spot.
Police have apprehended the BMW driver, identified as 38-year-old Deepak, a resident of Mandoli’s Pratap Nagar. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, officials said.
The fatal crash triggered anger among local residents and the victim’s family members, who gathered at the site and blocked the road in protest. The disruption affected traffic movement on the stretch between NSG Red Light and Terminal 3 of the Delhi airport.
Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed to control the situation and restore traffic movement. Commuters travelling towards T3 were temporarily diverted through alternate routes, including the NH-48 cut at Mahipalpur.
Traffic police later confirmed that the roads leading towards T3 from the NSG traffic light and in the opposite direction had been reopened.
