With an F-35 downed, Qatar’s LNG plant ablaze, and oil prices spiralling, Washington signals it may be nearing the endgame

Three weeks into America’s military campaign against Iran, President Donald Trump has signalled a potential off-ramp, posting on Truth Social that the US is “getting very close to meeting our objectives” and considering “winding down” operations.

The pivot follows a dramatic escalation spiral Israel struck a key Iranian gas field this week, prompting Tehran to retaliate by targeting the world’s largest LNG plant in Qatar. Energy markets convulsed instantly. Iran also claimed a historic milestone, alleging it “seriously damaged” a US F-35 stealth fighter, with US Central Command confirming an emergency landing.

Facing mounting economic pressure, Washington temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil already at sea unlocking approximately 140 million barrels to stabilise global supply through April 19.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the mission timeline was originally projected at four to six weeks.
