Landslides shut Char Dham routes, Delhi streets flood, and stray lightning claims lives in MP as IMD warns of week-long heavy rain
Torrential overnight rain triggered flash floods in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, with a surge of stones and debris tearing through the Sarol locality and nearby areas early Tuesday. Homes and shops were swamped, with debris piling up to first-floor levels in several houses.
In Uttarakhand, landslides struck Chamoli, Tehri, Uttarkashi, and Rudraprayag on Tuesday morning. Debris blocked the Kedarnath National Highway between Kund and Kakda, and the Sonprayag-Gaurikund highway was also shut, forcing authorities to suspend the Char Dham Yatra for two days.
Delhi woke up to heavy rain Tuesday morning, leaving several roads waterlogged.
At Panjab University in Chandigarh, a PhD scholar died of electrocution while walking from her hostel to her department. Separately, lightning killed three people, including an 11-year-old, in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district on Sunday evening.
Fresh satellite imagery shows cloud cover stretching 1,500 km from West Bengal to Uttarakhand, driven by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, HP, Uttarakhand, UP, MP, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar in the coming week.
