Rajinikanth’s mass-action sequel heads for a record opening, with overseas markets and Tamil Nadu leading pre-sales

Chennai, October 11: Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has made a thunderous start at the ticket counter. Worldwide advance bookings crossed ₹20 crore within roughly a day of opening, with four days still to go before release.

Bookings opened in select overseas territories on October 9, in most of India on October 10, and in Kerala on the morning of October 11. Despite the staggered rollout, overseas markets have led the charge, contributing almost $2 million in pre-sales.

In India, where bookings had not yet opened in all states and centres on Saturday, the film still grossed more than ₹4 crore in a single day. Of that, over ₹3.53 crore came from opening-day tickets. Tamil Nadu accounts for nearly 90% of domestic pre-sales, and Chennai alone has contributed ₹1.63 crore.

These figures are expected to climb sharply once bookings open fully for the Malayalam and Hindi-dubbed versions. Rajinikanth films are not traditionally pan-India releases, but they do strong business beyond Tamil Nadu. An ensemble of stars from several film industries, along with a rumoured Hrithik Roshan cameo, could push Jailer 2 into pan-India territory.

The sequel, again directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, follows Jailer (2023), which grossed over ₹600 crore worldwide and became one of the biggest hits of Rajinikanth’s career.
