Nepal’s security crisis deepened Wednesday as prisoners staged multiple escape attempts amid ongoing anti-corruption protests. At Dillibazaar jail, inmates attempted to flee but were unsuccessful after army reinforcements quickly controlled the situation. The prisoners had spilled onto streets chanting slogans before military forces cordoned off the area to prevent movement.
However, Navalparasi West district prison witnessed a major security breach as over 500 inmates successfully escaped after setting fires inside the facility and demanding their release. Despite deployment of army, police, and armed police forces, most prisoners managed to flee during the chaos.
Responding to escalating unrest, the Nepali Army announced a nationwide curfew from 10 PM Wednesday to 6 AM Thursday, following prohibited orders until 5 PM. Military officials cited public safety concerns, alleging that rioter groups had infiltrated demonstrations to engage in vandalism, arson, looting, attacks on people and property, and attempted sexual harassment.
For foreign nationals stranded in Nepal, the army issued an emergency helpline (01-5979571) and email (dte-dpr@nepalarmy.mil.np), urging tourists to contact nearby security personnel. Hotels and tourism operators have been requested to assist foreign visitors during the crisis.
