Arnab could be the next cyclone name. IMD says the system is moving west-north-westwards and is likely to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur by September 23 night
A deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal intensified on Tuesday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The system is moving towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast and is expected to cross between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur by the night of September 23.
The weather system has been moving west-northwestwards at around 7 kmph over the past six hours, according to the IMD.
In its latest update, the department said the system was centred near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 85.4°E at 5.30 pm on September 22. It was located around 140 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam, 150 km south-southeast of Gopalpur, 210 km south-southwest of Puri and 220 km east of Visakhapatnam.
Heavy rain forecast
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Andhra Pradesh between September 22 and 25. Isolated heavy spells are likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema under the system’s influence.
‘Arnab’ is the next cyclone name
If the system intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Arnab’, according to the regional cyclone-naming list. Bangladesh contributed the name, which means “ocean” in Bengali.
The name is part of the naming system maintained for tropical cyclones over the North Indian Ocean by the World Meteorological Organization and the IMD.
