Gyanesh Kumar says SIR is legal, transparent, and mandated under law

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday defended the Election Commission’s decision to carry out the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list before the Bihar assembly elections. Addressing a press conference in Patna, he said the exercise is both legal and necessary under the Representation of the People Act, and delaying it until after the elections would be “unjustified.”

Kumar highlighted that 17 new initiatives are being implemented to enhance the electoral process and stressed the importance of “mock polls” to ensure transparency. He revealed that while 65 lakh ineligible names were deleted earlier, 3.66 lakh more have now been removed.

The CEC urged voters to file objections if they notice errors in the rolls, noting that complaints can be appealed before District Magistrates. Political parties have already been provided with the updated voter lists for scrutiny.
