Swedish Academy honours author for visionary work affirming art’s enduring power amid apocalyptic themes

STOCKHOLM, Oct 9: The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai, recognizing his exceptional contribution to contemporary literature.Krasznahorkai received the prestigious honour “for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art,” the Academy announced in Stockholm.

The Nobel Prize in Literature, first awarded in 1901, has now been presented 117 times to 121 laureates. Krasznahorkai joins an illustrious list of literary giants recognized for their outstanding contributions to world literature.

Known for his complex narrative style and philosophical depth, the Hungarian writer’s works explore themes of existential crisis while celebrating artistic resilience. His dense, contemplative prose has earned international acclaim despite remaining challenging for mainstream audiences.

British author Doris Lessing holds the distinction of being the oldest Nobel Literature laureate, receiving the award at 87.
