Olympiad Medalists and Sports Champions Can Secure BTech Admission from 2026 Session

IIT Kharagpur is set to revolutionize its admission process by introducing alternative pathways beyond JEE Advanced for BTech and BS programs, starting from the 2026-27 academic session . The institute’s senate has approved two new admission routes: Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and Science Olympiad Excellence Admissions (SCOPE), allowing talented students to bypass the traditional JEE Advanced requirement .
Under these schemes, students who have won medals in national or international Olympiads or sports competitions will be eligible for direct admission without requiring a JEE Advanced rank . However, standard eligibility criteria including Class 12 qualification and age limits remain mandatory for all applicants.
Following the approval, IIT Kharagpur will establish a committee with representatives from all departments to finalize implementation guidelines, which are expected to be released soon . The institute plans to introduce supernumerary seats in its engineering programs specifically for these quota admissions .
This groundbreaking initiative follows similar programs at IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, and IIT Gandhinagar, marking IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to diversifying its talent pool beyond conventional examination systems.
