The fragile US-Iran ceasefire teetered on a knife’s edge Wednesday as President Donald Trump declared the two nations were “right on the borderline” between a landmark agreement and a return to devastating conflict.
Speaking after a Coast Guard Academy address in Connecticut, Trump issued an unambiguous ultimatum Iran must provide “100 per cent good answers” or face swift military consequences. “We’re all ready to go,” he warned.
Behind the scenes, tensions ran equally high. A phone call between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly turned heated, with Netanyahu whose “hair was on fire” according to Axios pushing hard for resumed strikes to further cripple Iran’s military and destabilise its regime by targeting critical infrastructure. Washington, by contrast, is leaning toward a negotiated exit.
A revised peace framework, jointly drafted by Qatar and Pakistan with input from regional mediators, is currently being reviewed by Tehran a development Trump acknowledged while maintaining cautious optimism.
The White House simultaneously posted a pointed social media graphic listing what it called “enemies of America eliminated” featuring assassinated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei a reminder that Washington’s patience carries a hard edge.
