Moscow submits cost proposal as India begins negotiations; final approval will require clearance from finance ministry and CCS
New Delhi, September 5: India has moved closer to acquiring five additional S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia, with Moscow submitting a Bill of Quantities (BOQ) proposal to New Delhi, paving the way for cost negotiations, according to sources cited in the report.
The proposed acquisition will require approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) after the price is finalised and the finance ministry gives its clearance.
The development comes as the final S-400 system under India’s 2018 contract with Russia is scheduled to arrive in November. The five-system deal signed in 2018 was valued at $5.43 billion.
The S-400 gained prominence during Operation Sindoor, when the system was deployed as part of India’s air-defence network. The report said the system was credited with engaging a Pakistani airborne early-warning aircraft at a reported distance of 314 km.
Meanwhile, there is no decision yet to acquire two squadrons of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, although the Indian Air Force has shown interest in Moscow’s proposal, the report said.
The fifth S-400 system is expected to be deployed in India’s eastern sector facing China.
