MEA reiterates support for peace efforts, responds cautiously on Pakistan’s role and regional diplomacy

New Delhi, April 17 – India is closely monitoring the evolving situation in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday, amid questions over Pakistan’s role in the US–Iran ceasefire.
Speaking at a weekly briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal offered a measured response, stating that India is “closely following developments” in the region. He refrained from commenting directly on remarks by Donald Trump praising Pakistan’s involvement.
Jaiswal welcomed ongoing ceasefire efforts, including between Israel and Lebanon, and reaffirmed India’s support for initiatives promoting regional peace. He also confirmed that India has received an invitation to a meeting hosted by Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer on the Strait of Hormuz, with further details expected soon.
On citizen safety, the MEA said 2,361 Indians have been evacuated from Iran since the conflict began. India also rejected Pakistan’s comments on its internal delimitation process.
